DJ hero

I loved guitar hero back in the days. The concept was amazing! Rip off Guitar freaks right off and say that you came up with the idea yourself! Now instead of ripping off rockband again activision decided that it’s time to come up with something original and the result is pretty amazing.

DJ hero is what you would expect if you ever played guitar hero. Just put down your controller on the table and pretend you’re a DJ. While the controller is far more complex this time around it’s fairly easy to learn. After you’re done with the tutorial (wich they force you to play) you can easily go out there and play the songs.

Oh yeah, the songs. Since it’s a music game it’s all about the songs. Unlike the guitar hero games after the 3rd, this game have a decent supply of songs. Most of the songs fall into the categories hip hop or electronic music, there’s a couple of pop songs thrown in there to keep the casuals happy.

When I tell people that I own DJ hero the most common questions are about the controller. It does feel like a piece of plastic, but the disc is wighted down and feel somewhat real. The buttons on the disc feels pretty good too, but I would expect more from the crossfader. The crossfader feels completely different from a real crossfader. First things first, there seems to be some kind of game bug. The crossfader goes haywire at random, and i´m not the only one with this problem and it snaps in the middle. I found this sort of annoying while doing fast switches from left to right or right to left.

I found the online play very random too. Sometimes im up against total idiots that can’t play for two shits, and sometimes I go up against people that 5 star everything. It definitely needs some kind of ranking system with matchups.

I like this game a lot. The price tag was breathtaking at 1199 SEK (119 USD) but the well build controller and amount of songs makes up for it. Too bad a new controller costs about the same as the controller+the game because then it won´t be as appealing as a party game anymore.

If you have a lot of money that you can spend or just want to pretend DJ you should buy this.

ps. You can play as Daft Punk which is a plus in my book.

Oh yeah and add me on PSN: “miniakira” and i’ll beat your ass online.

Short note: Why oh why!?

Rocket knight adventures, one of the best game on sega genesis, sadly was raped by the “let’s make 10 shitty remakes instead of 1 good” train thats been coming around too often nowadays. Turtles in time didn’t work out so on to the next game.

Rocket knight adventures is a platformer where you play as an opossum called rocket knight I guess. Of course the little fella wears a rocket pack on his back and wields a sword. I haven’t played it for about 12 years or so, I guess the only good thing about this video was to remind me how awesome it was back in the days.

Any ways, as usual I was checking todays new videos on gametrailers and I found “Rocket knight” and I thought that this was just the sega game,  converted to xbox 360/ps3. Of course not! Remake 2.5D style T_T.

I never really liked 2.5 D games. Especially not remakes of old classics that is in 2.5 D.

What the fuck konami…. What the fuck…

Okay so usually im too lazy to write about games I play nowadays, but yesterday I found a game I really enjoyed. A game that deserves the time it takes to write an article. The game was Machinarium.

Besides the fact that this game has the most annoying title to pronounce, I didn’t know much about it. I saw it on the steam store when I browsed around for some game that might entertain me for a couple of hours. I started to look at the print-screens, well fair enough the game has one of the most amazing artworks i’ve ever seen. The whole game is hand drawn to perfection.

There was no decent reviews to be found. So I took a chance and just got the game hoping that if the game sucked I could look at the pretty pictures at least. I must confess that I’m a huge fan of point and click adventure games. I even bet I could jerk off to monkey island (fuck yeah I’m hardcore). Machinarium got it all right. Artwork, humor, controls, all of them was perfect to my taste.Only complaint is that it’s so short! I need more damn it!

What is this awesome game about you might ask? Well it’s hard to pinpoint since all you get is short, crummy drawn videos that tells the story the more you progress through the game. You’re a small robot, and you are getting bullied around by some asshole robots. You need to stop them from blowing up the city with a bomb and save your girlfriend from the prison. As I said you only get videos to tell the story so the characters don’t have any names.

It took me about 5 hours to get through but I did the whole thing pretty quick. If you’re a point n’ click veteran like myself you might do better but count about 5-7 hours gametime of awesome animations and an interesting story. You can clearly see that this game is inspired by “The neverhood” wich is a good thing. Because I love that game. Also go play the neverhood now if you haven’t done that yet.

A great indie game wich you NEED to play to be cool.

You can play the demo online in your browser at:

Champions Online: first impressions.

A while back I made a post about Champions online. The game from cryptic studios and is company that made city of heroes. Well anyways Yesterday open beta started and after sitting the whoooole night trying to get into the game I finally got to play early this morning. It was worth it.

I started out playing playing around with the hero creator and there’s a lot of stuff to play with. Sadly it’somtimes hard to find what you want and just making a hero if you’re serious, could take up to 30 minutes.

Anyways I made a hero called akira using only guns instead of superpowers I was ready to try it out. What suprised me was that the learning curve for CO was a lot shorter then it’s baby brother City of heroes. I got into the game really fast and I started grinding quests in notime. All the quests are marked on the mini map as circles showing you where the item or whatever is.

Travel powers was fun to play around with. Picking a flying one seems to be the most effective one. Swinging, super jump and rocket jump is hard to land on a precise spot. Digging and superspeed makes you take the long way all the time. I use rocket boots for my character and it works out great. You start out slow but increase in speed til you reach max speed. If you get hit you get reduced to “gear 1”.

Something that disappointed me was  the new fighting system. I was told that it would be more like and action game instead of “Kick your chins kick my chins” like we see in other mmorpgs. It’s more like a normal mmorpg except you have to block special attacks. The enemy will show a weird icon over his head and that means that he/she is charging his lazer, And you better block it or about 50% of your hp is gone. This can suck really bad when you’re fighting a lot of mobs with super attacks.

The quests are really interesting and keeps you going. Since it’s a beta two quests failed me, but it doesn’t matter. The instanced small bossfights is the most fun quests I ever did in an mmorpg.

I LOVE how you don’t have to eat or drink when you grind. There’s a good flow to it and if you would run away from a fight it’s as simple as standing still for a few seconds and try again. If you die you ressurect at the closest spawnpoint ready to go.

This is a must buy for mmorpg lovers that can’t stand fantasy mmorpgs anymore, or just wants to try something new. This was just a short text to give you some of my thoughts on this game. Looking forward to seeing you online on september 1st!

PS3:Fat princess

Yep we’re back from the summer break. Since almost no games was coming out or being announced since E3 we thought we would take a break.

Today it’s time to review the game Fat princess for the ps3.

Simple and fun is the two words best describing this game. No story no missions, just plain head to head combat at it’s best. The only goal is to get your princess back while keeping the other teams princess captured in your prison. If you don’t count that lame ass fotball game (wich I don’t).

You start out as a simple peasant and to change to an actual class you have  5 hat machines in your base that makes hats (duh?) and if you put it on, you turn into the class the hat represents. You get to choose between 5 diffrent classes: Warrior, priest, ranger, worker and mage. It’s pretty easy to figure out what each class does if you ever played an rpg or something like that, exept for the worker. Workers cut down wood and get it to the base. They are in charge of building gates for the base, building ladders to get into the enemy base and to upgrade hatmachines.

Now if you’re wondering about the name “Fat princess” it’s because you can feed your prisoner (the other teams princess) CAKE! When you feed her this cake she becomes fat and it takes more time dragging her fat ass, if she’s been lazy on her diet.

I really like how simple Fat princess is. It took me about 10 minutes to understand everything in the game. Try to get the princess, keep theirs, upgrade your buildings to get better hats and win the game, thats about it.

If you’re wondering about my opinion I can only say that this game is the shit if you’re looking for a great game to have between games. It can get a bit repeditive and the connection problems is a bit frustrating but at 14 euros you can’t really complain. If you’re lucky to get 5+ friends to play this game it can be a lot more fun since most people doesn’t have a headset for the ps3 and it’s the kind of game you need tactics and teamwork to succeed every time.

Oh yeah forgot to mention that Fat princess is coming out to the psp wich im looking forward too, since this is perfect for handheld gaming

PSP go

When I first saw the psp go! I thought it would be very uncomfortable to hold it. It looks pretty okay after seeing this video and I hope both metal gear and Little big planet will be something worthwhile, since that’s the only reason im getting one of theese

E3 2009: The motion control war

Motion controls logo

With the wii sadly having a great success with the sales we’ve entered what I would like to call the motion control wars. Motion control is what the name suggests, it’s a control using your motions and add it to the game somehow. Nintendo introduced motion controls with the wii and it made the casual crowd go crazy about videogames. Apparently the casual crowd has more money than us gamers. So anyways this year the other two big compaines Microsoft and Sony jumped on the train to easy cash  and all of the big three added something that would enhance motion controls.

Im going to split it into Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo and tell you about them with the pros and cons.

First up we have the obvious one, Nintendo. They introduced the wii motion plus wich is a small addon for your wiimote and it’s supposed to make it more accurate and more responsive. To play the game Red steel 2 you need one of theese or else it wont work. I really don’t see any pros in this case, I mean it’s another friggin addon you have to pay your hard earned money for just to play the games they are releasing. It kinda feels like Nintendo didn’t make the wiimote proper the first time and they needed to release an addon just to make it work like it was supposed to from the start. Weak nintendo..

Nintendo needs to make more game that uses the motion control without it being a sucky minigame collection.. Again..

Microsoft’s vision was more about not having any controllers at all and just playing with your body (hehe). Showing some interesting demo of a girl playing with balls (Im on a roll today) in a 3d enviorment. They call it Natal and it seems to work pretty good. Even though the guy doing the demo said the avatar was following him perfectly when it just twitched around like he had boneitis. Yeah I get it it’s a prototype bla bla. This demo impressed me until I realised that if I had to play that crazy ass game kicking balls I had to jump around and stuff. First things first: Gamers isn’t usually the best at sports, the sooner you realise this game compaines the better. Second: My apartment is a pretty decent size and I can’t really see myself having the space to jump around playing games. So my though was that maybe they are just targeting people that owns their own house with a big living room wich has the sofa placed directly in front of the TV.

Anyways I was impressed by it all, but then they had to ruin it all by inviting the most annoying guy ever to the stage also known as Peter Molyneux. You know the guy who made fable and lied about it being a free game and whatnot. Lionhead was apparently working with a “game” where you control a little boy called Milo. My impressions of this “game” was very mixed. I mean it was cool to see the boy react to all the stuff the firl in the video was doing. Then I asked myself: “Why is this being made, and who wants a scary virtual little boy that you can talk to?”. If they aren’t targeting pedophiles and lonely people that needs a friend, I don’t really know.

Microsoft has a huge advantage of removing controllers completly but they just need to make something more interesting than a copy of eyetoy to make it all work. Controlling the menues on the dashboard with handmotions can get boring after a couple of minutes.

Sony had something wiimote ish looking to show up at their press confereance.  Out of the three this one was my favorite. We didn’t get to know much about the ps3 motion control but it looks like it’s a hybrid of the natal and the wiimotes. It was very accurate just like the Natal but it had buttons just like a wiimote wich can be an advantage in this case. This makes it easier to apply it to a normal game instead of a party gimmic game. In their demo we got to see a guy controlling an RTS, Swordswining and arrowshooting. It felt like this was a pure prototype and im hoping to see more of it soon.

If all the companies wants to make this motion control work they need to apply it to games instead of making games around the motion control. If you think about what Microsoft said about the normal controller being a barrier, it feels like the motion control is a barrier to make good games. A normal controller is something we had since the 80’s and it still works. The tech is very young and I bet that after a while they will get it right but not this gen.

Who will win this war? Noone because my spidey sense is saying they will all go to the dark side and make casual workout games.
