Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse

I thought I would continue the whole Disney games on the Mega Drive theme so here a review of the game Mickey Mania.

As a kid I LOVED this game, I dont really know why, because it really sucks balls and I will explain why.
The game was supposed to be an anniversary game for Mickey Mouse’s 65th birthday but the idea got scrapped due to a short deadline. Instead they made this game where you travel back to some of the classic Mickey Mouse cartoons.

The game starts out at the classic cartoon Steamboat Willie and everything is black and white at the start, but as the level progresses more colors are added.
I was very shocked how good the graphics was since there are alot of 3D elements everywhere around the game. The first level is very easy and very pleasant to play.

After the first level you progress to the second level: The Mad Doctor and here’s where you start ripping your hair. Sometimes its very hard or impossible to not get hit by flying bones, bats, or falling into pits. Theres so much shit coming at Mickey, you can’t really avoid getting hit a few times. Well that wouldnt be so bad if it wasn’t for the hard cold fact that you only have 4 lives and 1 continue!

Get used to this screen..

It took me about 20 game overs playing the whole game over and over again until I even reached the last boss and another 4 until I beat him. Isn’t this supposed to be a game for kids? It wouldn’t piss me off so much if you didn’t have to restart the whole game over and over again. I didn’t even get a single extra life. I only saw them, mocking me from some platform I just couldn’t reach.
The last level is just too brutal. It’s too long, too many enemies, not enough ammo to kill the enemies. I didn’t have any fun at all playing this with the exception of the last boss, Pete, being a breath of fresh air with really fun gameplay elements, like pushing a little platform with spikes and making him jump on them.

One thing that makes this game hard, are the controls. It’s a bit hard to explain if you haven’t played it, but Mickeys’ jumps feels somewhat wierd.. A bit buggy. When you’re standing on a ledge you get an animation with Mickey trying to regain balance. This locks everything exept for the jumping, wich sometimes also fail due to the animation.

Okay so it isn’t all bad. It does have, as mentioned, very good visuals. The worlds you visit is usually pretty pleasant to explore with the exception of the fucking ghost level because that one is just torture and has the most “forced-hits” and annoying platform jumping of all the stages. Pluto helps you out to spot the moose running at you all the time at the hunting level and I like his apperances thoughout the game. The jokes are funny at times, as an example on the mad doctor level at the boss theres a chalkboard that has some pictures that say “Duck+Pluto/Saw”. I have to admit I laughed when Mickey died and the only soundeffect being “Uh-oh”. Mickey Mania does have some good tunes, but most of the time I was too pissed off to notice the music in the background. It would be an awesome game if it would get you infinite continues or maybe if they toned down the difficulty of the game a bit. The difference between easy and hard is just the amounts of checkpoints thoughout the game which doesn’t really help much.

Now don’t get me all wrong. I do love a challenge but with Mickey Mouse you didn’t really expect it and the whole thing feels a bit unintentional.

Just as a sidenote the game developers, Traveller’s Tales, also made other shitty games like Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R back in the days, but I guess they came to their senses and started making popular titles like Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures.

To sum this game up: If you played it as a kid, don’t play it again unless you want a really, really challenging platformer and you think Megaman 9 and “I wanna be the guy” wasn’t enough.

If your like me you will only scar your childhood memories.
Good game overall which was ruined by the hard and unforgiving difficulty level.. “you know? for kids!”
It may be the most underrated hard game out there.
